1. What is world hunger? What is going on in terms of world hunger?
World hunger is defined as “the want or scarcity of food in a country” but on a global scale. Effects of world hunger can include malnutrition, which is a term indicating lacking nutrients needed to support human life. Technically, it is a lack of calories (a unit of measurement of how much energy is in food) and protein. In terms of world hunger, 870 million people out of the world’s 7.1 billion people are undernourished, a form of malnutrition where a person is not consuming enough food to keep them healthy. That number signifies one in eight people are malnourished. Malnutrition and undernourished people aren’t only in developing countries though; there are sixteen million undernourished people in developed countries.
2. Why should we consume grain products?
Grain products are important to consume because they are nutritious and they are also useful in countries with malnourished because they are usually cheap products. To start, whole grains are a good source of fiber. Fiber is important because it can help prevent sicknesses like heart disease or diabetes. Fiber can also improve digestive health, which is important because it allows the body to absorb more healthy nutrients of the food instead of processing too quickly and missing some of these nutrients. Whole grains can also lower the risk of gastrointestinal disorders such as irregularity and/or diverticular disease. White flour is good too, even if it isn’t as good as the whole grain. White flour is enriched with iron, and iron is especially important for women as they lose more blood than men do. The loss of blood causes more need for iron to sustain the body after losing the blood.
3. How can we make a difference?
We can make a difference in Canada by donating food to food banks or helping non-profit organizations involved in feeding the people who suffer from malnutrition all over the world. Financial contributions to these non-profit organizations is a good idea, but it is important to research the organization in order to know exactly where your money is going. If you aren’t comfortable raising money for a charity, another method would be starting your own support group in your community or school and doing the fundraising yourself so that you know exactly where the money is going and maybe have a higher feeling of satisfaction in the end.
